2020 Joan Chittister Fund for Prisoners Appeal

Dear friends,

This, I hope, will be one of the stranger appeal letters you get from me.

I realize that the word on the streets is that nothing will ever be the same after the pandemic. And I suppose, at one level, that's true. But at another level it's not.

There will always be prisons, I'm sure. But, God willing, not prisons like these that are developing now. The overcrowding—the lack of any kind of controlled personal space, let alone “social distancing”—is totally out of control.

Called to Question: A Spritual Memoir

Oct 26, 2020

The problem of the nature of faith plagues us all our lives. Is openness to other ideas infidelity, or is it the beginning of spiritual maturity? What is it that can possibly take us so far afield from the initial believing self? How do we explain to ourselves the journey of getting from there to here, from unquestioning adherence to institutional answers, to the point of asking faithful questions? It took years before I realized that maybe it is belief itself, if it is real, that carries us there.

  • In her latest column in the National Catholic Reporter, Joan Chittister asks: "Since honesty as a prerequisite of character has apparently ceased to be an issue for the electorate at large, have we, as a moral nation, already collapsed?

  • How does the phrase “Hobson’s choice” apply to the 2020 presidential election? To find the answer, read Joan Chittister’s latest online NCR column. Click here.

About Joan

An outspoken advocate of justice, peace and equality

Joan Chittister, a Benedictine Sister of Erie, has dedicated her life to voicing questions that test popularly accepted truths of the day. Her questions to both church and society focus on the empowerment of women, the development of contemporary spirituality, a redefinition and renewal of Benedictine life for seekers today, and justice for the oppressed and marginalized, particularly those in prison. Here are four Good Works that reflect her life commitments:
